A new national center for AI innovation will bring one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers to Denmark. The supercomputer will be hosted by Digital Realty in one of its AI-ready data centers in Denmark.

Denmark is launching a new national center for AI innovation. The new center will bring one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers (the NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD) to Denmark, allowing both public and private sectors to develop AI solutions and quantum computing, accelerating research and innovation in health, life science, and sustainability.

Digital realty will host Gefion in one of its AI-ready data centers in Denmark.

The supercomputer, which has already been named Gefion, will be hosted by Digital Realty in one of its AI-ready data centers in Denmark. In Norse mythology, Gefion is the goddess for agriculture, fertility, abundance, and prosperity and is often translated as “the generous one.”

Pernille Hoffmann, Managing Director of Digital Realty Nordics, says:  "We are proud to be a part of this pioneering AI initiative. This is an example of how working together across industries gives us the opportunity to leverage AI and provide the foundation for societal change.”

Public-private partnership enables innovation

The project will come to life in a public-private cooperation between Novo Nordisk Foundation, NVIDIA, and EIFO (Export and Investment Fund in Denmark). The Danish centre for AI Innovation, which is backed by Novo Nordisk Foundation and EIFO, will own and operate the supercomputer. Any generated revenue will be reinvested in the initiative.

Henrik Hansen, CEO Danish Data Center Industry, comments: “We believe Denmark and the Nordics have the potential to become a leading hub for hosting and developing AI applications. Denmark already has very favorable conditions to ensure that the infrastructure AI runs on is sustainable. In addition, a robust Danish data center ecosystem is ready and in place to support future AI initiatives.”

The Danish centre for AI innovation is expected to open by the end of 2024, at which point it will be ready for pilot projects.
